The Durham Regional Police Service is asking the community to identify the person(s) responsible for vandalizing the Devi Mandir Temple on Brock Road in Pickering over the weekend.

Sometime in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 28th, 2008, person(s) unknown smeared fecal material on the front glass doors of the Hindu Temple. Detectives are reviewing video surveillance images as the investigation continues.

Police Chief Mike Ewles is disturbed by this incident and is urging someone to step forward with information.

“This act of vandalism, tinged with hatred, is most disturbing and we want to send a strong message out that this type of ignorance will not be tolerated in Durham Region,” the Chief says, “Members of this Temple contribute greatly to the richness and vitality of our community and these acts are reprehensible and totally unacceptable.”

Anyone with information about this ongoing investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Silipo of the 19 Division (Ajax-Pickering) Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2531.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.

Jai Mata Di, I was very very sad and angry to read about this disgusting act.
This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and the person(s) responsible must be punished.
This act is indeed a HATE CRIME and MUST be escalated to the Mayor, Ontario Premier and Prime Minister levels. It must not be left in the Police hands only, but must be addressed at a National level. This is the only way to make a statement and stop these human trash out there. We must have zero tolerance for these types of digusting acts.

I am from India and when I am in Toronto, I regularly visit Devi Mandir on sundays. It has such a spiritual atmosphere that, you'll forget this material world. And the one who has desanctified this sacred place will surely be punished by the almighty. Durham Police auhorities should probe this matter seriously and take action against the guilty to instill confidence among the Hindu populace.

This is indeed a hate crime and should be treated as such. If it were a mosque the whole community would be up in arms and demand some retribution. There should be zero tolerance here.

Just out of curiousity... why is this only vandalism and not a hate crime? Why is it only "tinged" with hatred?
This is a seroius question; does the act have to have a certain 'level' of hatred to be considered a hate crime, when it is clearly motivated out of hate and cultural ignorance?

It is very sad....but personally, I'd like to see better lighting in the parking lot and the entire place fenced around and gated at the front similar to other mandirs in the GTA....having the gates open only during mandir hours can help prevent unwanted people from entering

People with this much hatred (especially towards holy places) will eventually meet their time of trouble. Karma (whether good or bad) escapes no one.
