HariOm Sharan
Hari Om Sharan with Nandini Sharan
Hari Om SharanThe best of Hollywood's music industry took time off from their hectic schedule to pay tribute to the world's premier bhajan singer, Hari Om Sharan. In honor of the lifetime work of this living legend, the Bramhm Prince Company has produced an album of Hari Om's bhajans, sung by the front runners of India's music industry, titled "Hari Om - A Life in Prayer."
Neil Prashad, founder of the Bramhin Prince Company and producer of this CD, has called on the leading singers and musicians in India to pay tribute to Hari Om Sharan, in which they all agreed with sincerity and conviction. The multitude of singers and musicians who lent their time, support and voices to its fruition captures this CD's uniqueness. Bhajan Samraat Anup Jalotaji said, "I have learned so much from listening to the bhajans of Pt. Hari Om Sharan ji. It is an honor to be able to pay tribute to this great singer by singing one of his bhajans."

Hariharan of Colonial Cousins and winner of MTV Viewers Choice Award and US Billboard Award, expressed himself by thanking Hari Om Ji for the spirituality that he brought to the world. "It is an honor and privilege to sing on this album. I was delighted when I heard about the project and am happy to be a part of it," expressed Hariharan. Another celebrity on the album is Kavita Krishnamurthy, winner of four Filmfare Awards - the equivalent of America's Oscar - most recently for Dola Re (Devdas). "What struck me most, is the simplicity with which he sings. It is almost like the person singing is a 'sant' or 'fakir'," said Kavita.

The conglomerate of singers also include Sonu Nigam, the voice of Mohammed Rafi and winner of the 2004 Filmfare Award for best male playback singer (Kal Ho Na Ho); Shankar Mahadevan, 2004 Filmfare award winner for Dil Chahta Hai; Richa Sharma winner of the Bollywood Awards 2002; Sadhana Sargam who has recorded hundreds of songs for the nostalgic series, Yaaden; India's hottest popular singer and winner of the Zee Cine Awards 2004, Shaan; Mahalaxmi lyer (Chhalkaa Chhalkaa) and Sunidhi Chauhan award winner for 'Bumbro' (Mission Kashmir).

ImageHari Om Sharan - Tribute CDA production of such magnitude naturally attracted some of India's greatest musicians. World's famous percussionist Sivamani, (Taal, Lagaan) provides the backdrop upon which this amazing tribute is painted. This album also debut Niladri Kumar as a Music Director, one of India's finest Sitar players and son of Pt. Kartik Kumar. This project was supported fully by santoor legend Pt. Shivkumar Sharma while his son Rahul Sharma played santoor on the album. Padma Vibhushan Pt. Jasraj, a foremost authority on Indian classical vocals, validates its authenticity with his glowing introduction. It is easy to say, in today's world of re-mixes, that this is another 'knock-off CD, a statement which is instantly silenced by the presence of Hari Om Sharan Ji at every recording session, giving his blessings to the artists and musicians. Shankar Mahadevan puts it best when he said, "This CD is our offering to the god of Bhajans, Hari Om Sharan ji."

I will miss his voice, even though I never seen him, I will always believed he is still with me all day all night and forever,as long as I am alive, I will feel the same about him, that he is still close to my heart and never feel like he has left the world.

For Nandini I believe she should keep singing, because she has a beautiful voice

Its a great LOSS to Hindu Bhakti songs.
Media did not cover such a great loss. Its not just shame for Media but a great SHAME on us (HINDUS) who do not care much for our religion and people who add value to it. Instead we are happy to know how and what Dubai supported actors are doing in their life. Its high time we start appreciating our culture and people like Hari Om Ji who added such a value to our culture.

I am neither a Hindu nor a believer in the Hinduism (perhaps I am too straightforward) but since my childhood, when his bhajans were being played from the Radio very frequently, I have been fan of the voice but I never knew his name. I was never interested in listening to Bhajans though would happen to hear some while being played somewhere else. A few years back while standing on a music shop I saw Premanjali and when read the list of bhajans some names reminded me of the melodius voice I heard in childhood. It was only then that I could identify the voice with a name and bought two of his albums. I listened to these very frequently. Then kept on playing after long gaps and now a only few days back i again got obsessed with tem and started playing them frequently. I do not usually become a fan and do not like to be called one but in his case I had been telling others that i am fan of the master of this great voice. I feel India has not produced any Bhajan singer who can be termed greater than Hari Om Sharan Ji (though some had been called samrats also). I always cherished a wish to meet him and listen to him live in some concert (though I do not visit mandirs or jagratas) but could not share it with many and kept on dreaming that some day he would come to Punjab and I would meet him. While sometime surfing chanels whenever i would come across a Bhajan being sung by Sharan Ji I would stop there till it would be over. A few days back I was discussing about him with a friend and shared my wish to listen him voice but then I also suspected that perhaps I have read some where that he is no more. But my friend, editor of a magazine on Punjabi music, (I am also a journalist/working an in English daily), said that he is living. I again started thinking that let me search on net and if I shall be lucky I shall have the occasion to listen him live. It was for the first time today that I searched for information/bhajans of Hari Om Sharan ji on net. But when I opened this site I was shocked to know that it was a year back that he passed away. My dream also died today. But his legend will live on.

Today I came to know that Pandit Hari Om Sharanji is no longer with us. Rarely have I felt such a deep personal loss at the death of a non-relative. He was a part of my life since I was a child and my father played his bhajans early in the morning!

Ravi mentioned that its shameful that there were very few people at panditji's wake. He could not be more right. But then this is not the first time we have failed to recognize and honor legends of your country. One of the reason could be that very little media coverage was given to him by our "secular" media.

I have a SUGGESTION - In this age of internet, we need not be at the mercy of commercial media. We all can do our best to keep his memory alive. His wikipedia page really needs to represent a legend - more pictures, details, life story etc. Similarly we can start blogs, facebook, orkut profiles which give indepth sight into this great saint's life. I promise to do my best on this and hope other will help out their level best too.

We can make this forum a starting point. Let the world not ignore panditji anymore. We will not let them ignore a great soul!

I am sure that Shri Hari Om Sharanji is with his God. He led an exemplenary life here on earth and truly define what a Brahmin is. What amazes me is number of folks just on this forum and others like it including devotees of mandirs across Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island and Long Island areas who are eager to express how much Shri Hari Om Sharanji's bhajans have INSPIRED them (and that is good) BUT where were all of these "so called inspired folks" at his wake, his pujas (10th and 12th day)? Sad to say on the nights of his waking there were no more than 10 non-SSNM devotees. Yet, so many are running around boasting of when he visited their homes, of when they sang with him or some other relative of theirs' sang with him and I am left befuddle with the poor attendance of his wake. I am then left ask: "Were you REALLY INSPIRED by his Bhajans and Kirtans?" "Do you REALLY thought of him as a GURU?" Or were you merely looking for your moment to BOAST of your "association" with him? Are you still among those who are looking to profit off of his passing as you were doing when he was alive? I can only shake my head in amazement of the type of society we are. No morals. No standards. Just HYPOCRITES. And these elements affects all of us and extends around us. Sad state indeed.

Today while surfing the net I felt the burning desire to know some history and address etc of Sh. Hari Om Sharan ji, who is my favorite bhajan singer, without any doubts. I grew listening him and still feel closer to Ram Ji and Hanuman Ji whenever I hear a bhajan or Arti in his divine voice. So while searching I was shocked to learn that he is no more and this news has come so late to me despite the fact that I almost everyday read news papers and watch tv . How come media did not cover it in its due perspective and why this legendary bhajan pandit got such a rude bid adieu from us. I am shocked and agitated for this reason. I feel pandit ji s life and works should be made avaible to people like us who revere him in highest esteem. I can never imagine worshipping my deity without the pious and soulful sound of Sharan Ji. My heartfelt condolences, howsoever late it may be still I do acknowledge the very very late information coming my way. I am still willing to meet his son/daughter/wife and pay my personal tributes.

Pranam Hari Om Ji.

Hearing to these bhajans will make one's turbulent mind, a calm pond. I wish god to give him more energy & strength to render some more sweet songs & Albums. Please inform me where I can find his old renderings i'e; songs sung before 90's.

It is indeed very sad to learn that Shri Hari Om Sharan Ji is no more.
With his departure , I have lost one of my elder brother. He has been very closed to our family since 1972 when he visited Thailand . That was his first and last visit. The People of Thailand , some how, were deprived of his blessings.

During my most of visits to India especially if I am in Bombay, I made it a point to visit them.

Last year, I got the best ever birthday gift when HARI OM SHARAN , NANDINI JI Sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me over LONG DISTANCE call from HARIDAWAR where they were with my mother.

NANDIJI, I am sure, you know how much I must havde felt on getting the news. Mataji was shocked when she was informed at Shri Dev Mandir and she broke the news to us with teas in her eyes.

WE all pray to the almighty to grant him a place at their holy feet.

Dear All,

It is indeed a news which leaves one completely overwhelmed at the loss suffered by the lovers of this great singer. For me he is Bhaiyaji and he will remain always that way. He gave me the insight about bhakthi as one form of music. This music transcended all other music for me. Every day , I felt like having blessings from him, I will get to listen to the braodcast of his bhajans in the morning Vividh bharathi. He is as trus a legend as anyone can come across.Even in most remote corners of India such as Rajouri, Poonch, Aut etc, one could always hear his bhajans being sung by local people in temples or in houses. It is indeed a great revelation that most of these were youngsters who did not know the singer but were affected by his bhajans. Even in Karnataka recently a local shop , an young business man was having his bhajns in his computer. when asked why, he simply smiled and said he likes it. I used to get up by 5.00am at Badrinath to hear his bhajans being put on the public address system by the Badrinarayan temple authorities just to hear his voice echoing across the wonderful valley. I used to stand transfixed looking at the mighty Neelkant peak and feel strangely elated.Once I heard his bhajans wafting out in a santacruz shop in Mumbai when I waiting for bus. I heard his shabads. I could aslo see two young sikh gentlemen got tuned to the voice and went near that shop. I also went along. They wanted the details of the shabads that was being played. Shopkeeper didnot know anything about it. I went along and gave as much details as I could. I later learnt to my pleasant surprise that those two young gentlemen were Ragis from Patna Sahib and they were very keen to arrange a programme there of my bhaiyaji.I remember him every day. I will allways try to share my deepest experiences of him as a musician and a wonderful person with other loved ones.

With warm regards to Bhabhiji,

Namaste
My condolences go out to Nandini and all the devotees of the bhajans of Hari Om Sharan. His passing is a loss to Devotional music and to the world of worship, for that is waht we did with hari Om's Bhajans. Every time we listened we engaged in prayer in puja. Hari OM Sharan is in my humble view the purest devotional singer of the modern era. I first came to know Hari Om when he visited Trinidad in the early 7o's. Here in TRinidad he recorde the hanuman Chalisa which I still believe is one of the veryt first rrecordings of the hanuman Chalisa and also recorded a long play trecors as well as a Ramayan record . The recordings were to the best of my knowledge done by Balroop Mungal of TRinidad. At that time hari Om was growing popular in the Caribbean where Hindus reside because of his song Jai jai jai Hanuman Gosaee. At that time too the song SHree radhe Govinda Gopala tera Pyara naam hai was also popular. My Brother Profesor Anantanand rambachan Professor of Religion at DSt Olaf College wrote an Englis Bhajan to the tune of Sri Radhe Govinda, so popular har it become among youths. The song "Shri Krishna O beloved, how sweet thy name singing in our hearts."
The most meaningful bhajan that Hari OM sang in my ipiniion is maili Chadhar orh ki kaise dwar tumhare.... This is a most meaningful bhajan and it will interesting to know what motivated this song. Hari OM Sharan sang at the first Ramayan Yagna at Divali Nagar, Trinidad and organized by the National Council for Indian Culture in Trinidad in 1988. That Yagna continues into its 20th year in 2008.
There is not one day in the period between the late 1960's and 2008 that his voice is not heard on radio here in Trinidad.
I am organizing an evening ofHari Om Sharan Bhajans to mark his passing. I hope this can be an annual event. the best singers in our country who have been singing his songs are being invited to thsi function which I am sure will be well atteded by the lovers of bhajans. However if there is anyone who has a biography of Hari Om Sharan i would be most grateful to receive it. It can be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it May you live forever hari Om. You are a great soul who have helped us on the path to Moksha through bhakti. May Shri Krishna bless you always.

As I was reading through all of the tributes and comments made on this site this outstanding human being - Hari Om Sharanji I could not help but think how many of us will truly use him as guide in our lives? For he is truly a role model. As hindus, we like to choose a "Guruji". But our scriptures cautions us that before we choose a Guruji we should observe that persons life style in every aspect possible. Now, here is a human being for whoever has had him for a Guruji is truly blessed. And you can rest assure that you have adhere to the teachings of your Dharma in choosing Hari Om Sharanji as your Guru. Over the past week and half I have read almost every article on the internet about him and has yet to read any with any negative feedback. Now that in itself says alot. For all of those who label or call themselves a "Guru", "Brahmin", "Saint", etc. Here is a exemplenary teacher on earth to follow. He had no wealth. He LIVED A LIFE OF A BRAHMIN..."The works of a Brahmin are: peace, self-harmony, austerity, and purity; loving-forgiveness and righteousness; vision and wisdom and faith; priests and teachers." I can truly say that I have never heard nor seen anyone lived the life of a "brahmin" until I met Hari Om Sharanji and read about this great person. May Lord Shri Ram give him an everlasting resting place. May his life's work be an inspiration to all Pandits, Gurus and other like minds. If we truly want to honor him let us be inspired. Let us be moved for changes instead of only uttering words of how much we respect him. Let us act in ways that would make him memory one that will live on forever. Let's make him our Mahâtmâ Gandhi, one of the greatest "servants of mankind". For Hari Om Sharanji deserves no less honor. Jai Shri Ram.
NOTE: as stated by another commentor earlier...wake, 10th and 12th pujas at the Shri Surya Narayan Mandir in Queens.

No words can thoroughly describe such a dynamic and honorable man. He carried his dharam everywhere in the form of bhajans and prayers. I grew up listening to his bhajans. Now, I get the opportunity to sing them in my temple. He had one of the most beautiful, calm and melodious voice. The voice of God as only I can imagine. May Bhagwan wrap him in his arms forever more.

Like a river merging into the ocean..losing its name and shape,Guruj's karma has surely qualified him to merge with the Paramatma..The Bhajans he offered to the world are like the flowers offered in Puja to God.Such a great soul Guruji has been..May God give Guruma the strength to live on celebrating the life of the Legend.

The world has lost a great soul. As i look at him lying there all i remembered is that voice of chear and happiness that would talk to me. I was fortunate to be his tabla player for a short period and if its one thing that i learnt is to be humble, it was like i was in the presence of the lord. A man of that greatness and still was humble jolly and full of excitement. It is said that when Hari Om Sharan sings the gods comes upon earth. Now I am sure he is singing for them it the heavens and as we loved him the gods would love him more. Whereever your soul is may you rest it peace. We both love you wherever you are . Bhajan legend Pandit Hari Om Sharan ji, sadly passed away yesterday in New York City.He would be tremendously missed in the music industry of India and indeed by millions all over the world, who knew him and loved his Bhajans. Once Anup Ji remarked we cannot have a bhajan programme without singing the bhajans of Hari OM Sharan Ji...

Undoubtedly, his debut on the world stage was in the 60s and 70s in Trinidad and Guyana where his popularity grew unstoppingly. His lyrics and music touched the hearts of many and very quickly the name 'Hari OM' became an international household name.
We are all deeply saddened by this great loss and our prayers are with him and indeed his family and all well wishers.

In view of this sad loss we would be paying tribute to this great Master during our Satsang on Sunday 23rd December 2007 at 10:30am at our Mandir premises, Forest Hill.
Please do come and bring along your friends and relations.

For Indian music lovers, especially of the bhajan type, this loss is monumental. Shri Hari Om Sharan, more than anyone else, revolutionized bhajan singing in the west. During his singing lifetime that spanned over 35 years, Shri Hari Om Sharan sang hundreds of bhajans, and sold millions of albums and CDs that won the hearts of not only Caribbean people, but also, those throughout the world.

Needless to say, Shri Hari Om Sharan's name was a household word in the Caribbean region, as well as, among the Indo-Caribbean community in North America, and beyond. Not only that, Hari Om Sharan had developed intimate relationships with the Caribbean people, too. He was married to a Guyanese, Nandani; was at one time the house guest in Ozone Park, New York, of Shri Prakash Gossai and his sister Dora, for over six months; and was at the time of his death, the house guest of popular musician, Anoop Dhanpat of the Sansaar Sangeet Orchestra.

It was really nice that Bollywood honored him for his tremendous contribution to humanity in October 2004. A special CD, "Hari Om - A Life in Pray," was also prepared and released to commemorate that event. In a tribute to Shri Hari Om Sharan, our noted Spiritual Leader, Shri Prakash Gossai, himself, an accomplished singer, says: "Hari Om Sharan influenced me more than anyone else as a bhajan singer." Shri Ramesh D Kallicharran of Kali Bharat Yatra Tours recalls: "I have vivid memories of Hari Om Sharan's bhajans, especially his earlier albums, such as 'Premanjali Pushpanjali,' and not to mention that on my most recent trip to India the entire group felt his vibration as we were about to visit the Ganges River."

May God bless his soul and protect his family!

I have had the honour of sharing many beautiful childhood memories with Dadji and his beautiful wife Nandani who hailed from Guyana. Dadaji was very close to my Mother Shri Dhanpatti Sharma and my father Shree Roopnarine Sharma. At his last concert here in Canada organized by Parvine Balkaran at the Woodbine Banquet Hall Dadaji and Nanadani they dedicated a song to my mother who passed away in 2001. I remember him spending many summers at our cottage on Lake Simcoe. He was a great lover of nature and would spend hours painting the sky, trees and birds. Our family will always treasure those beautiful paintings. I remember his jokes about Guyana and he would put on a Guyanese accent to make us laugh. I can sincerely say that I have met a true saint in my lifetime. He was the epitome of simplicity, pure love and his laughter will resound in our hearts and souls. May Shree Krishna grant him a place of rest at his holy Lotus feet. This Saint truly deserves a permanent abode in Heaven. Dadaji you are dearly missed!

For me it was Hari Om Sharan who instilled in me the subtle sensitivity to experience of music. Because I kept my experience of his music as a standard , I have been lucky to have expanded my listening to almost every genre of music , I could come across. It was his music in my being, which made me very sensitive to the nuances and subtleties of pure music which I could feel directly in my heart in spite of lack of understanding of words. I could relate his singing as a wonderfully memorable experience. I am also very lucky to know him for the last 30 years and I had the privilege of his performances in my house. Because of experiencing his music I could handle almost 30 music projects for Times Music, Kosmic Music and Anagha Music without knowing or studying music.I owe my passion of music to this great singer who is blessed by Mother Nature to experience her in moments of great joy and retrospection. I love him and seek blessing from him.
